Funderful is a fundraising software that helps universities increase alumni engagement and donations up to three times. Funderful clients span across 8 countries worldwide, among them Oxford colleges, Cambridge colleges, London Business School, American University in D.C. and many others. Combined, schools have already raised millions of dollars from alumni donations through the Funderful platform.
We help universities get young alumni to donate year after year
We started as volunteers at our school and took the school from no culture of giving to become the most generous in Europe. Then universities started reaching out to us asking to help create a culture of giving. That is when Funderful was born.
Proud to be part of the 500 Startups family. 500 Startups is a leading global venture capital seed fund based in San Francisco and Silicon Valley, and is voted as the best startup accelerator program in the world (Forbes).
We have been fortunate to be serving clients in eight countries already. These include universities that have no culture of giving and no resources, as well as universities with established giving traditions. All of them have tremendous untapped potential.
Based on the best global annual giving practices
Our advisor is Dave Celone, who is the former director of development, annual giving and alumnae/i relations at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. Prior to that, Dave served as co-director of The Dartmouth College Fund. Dave drove the Tuck Annual Giving campaign over a period of seven years to reach a record 72% annual giving participation rate among Tuck alumnae/i. His staff managed more than 2,000 volunteers worldwide in pursuit of its fundraising and relationship development goals. Dave is an honorary member of the Dartmouth College Class of 1979, and he owns Long River Gallery & Gifts, a fine art gallery and craft shop showing local art and craft in Lyme, New Hampshire. Dave works together with the Funderful team to incorporate the best annual giving practices into the Funderful product.
How it all started
We started as alumni fundraising volunteers at Stockholm School of Economics in Riga (SSE). Our school had almost no alumni participation so we set out to change that. In two short years we were able to develop a few campaigns ourselves and made SSE Riga have the highest alumni participation than any other school in Europe.
How did we do it? By challenging egos, tapping into nostalgia, and having fun.
We realized that we should not put the needs of the institution in the center. We realized that alumni have their needs. One of the strongest is their need to belong. Belong to their ‘tribe’. Isn’t an alumni community a tribe? We had to provide a way to reestablish the connection with the tribe through making a donation.
So we ambitiously decided to surpass the rate of the university that raised the most money that year – Stanford University, which received gifts from 34 percent of its alumni in 2011. Two years later, our efforts with the Let’s Beat Stanford campaign came to fruition. Here’s a short 3 minute case study:
Since the Let’s Beat Stanford campaign we have worked on online giving campaigns with universities and colleges in eight countries. Through trial and error we have seen successful campaigns and mediocre campaigns. To give you some comfort – you can say we have made all the mistakes for you.
We’re not promising that running a campaign will be easy, because we have done it ourselves and we realise the challenges involved. And that is also precisely the reason why our combination of proven principles of psychology with e-business management tools allows you to say good-bye to the annoying repetitive tasks demanding too much of your time and attention, while being able to focus on managing a fun and contagious campaign.
